Professional Training


Monthly Meetings:
The Greater Washington DC chapter generally meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month except for November and December, but check the calendar because dates are subject to change. Programs are directed towards professional development, self-improvement and industry trends/updates.

Regional and National Events: In addition to professional education these three meetings allow members to network with peers from around the United States.

  • The 54th Annual National Convention is August 26-29, 2009
    in Phoenix, AZ. NV.
  • Region 1 Annual Planning Conference - October 25, 2008, at the Crowne Plaza Valley Force in King of Prussia, PA
  • Joint Forum for Regions 1 and 14 will be held in Worcester, MA on May 1-3, 2009.

NEF Certification Programs: The NAWIC Education Foundation offers a number of continuing education and certification programs.

 

Workforce Development

Goodwill Female Construction Training Program:
This is a 15-week training program for low-income females in Prince George’s County, Maryland. NAWIC is coordinating with Goodwill of Greater Washington to create a mentoring program for enrolled female students in the training course.

 

K-12 Programs

Block Kids: The Block-Kids Building Program is a national building program competition that introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry. The program is open to all elementary school children in grades 1-6. The competition involves the construction of various structures with interlocking blocks. Our next Block Kids Competition will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2007 at the National Building Museum. For more information contact Rita Thompson.

CAD/Drafting Design Competition:
The CAD/Design/Drafting Competition is a contest designed for senior high students. The contest provides recognition to students for creative design, successful problem solving and craftsmanship in preparing architectural drawings. Entries are evaluated for detail, accuracy and originality of work. Objectives of the contest are to introduce the student to the construction industry in a positive and challenging manner, while fostering a sense of self-worth and building confidence. We are currently looking for high school teachers who would like to work with us on this event.

Careers in Construction Expo: The Careers in Construction Expo is a free educational event (sponsored by ABC National. ABC Metro Washington, ABC Virginia and Future Force NOW) highlighting the numerous professional and educational opportunities in the construction industry. Held at the National Building Museum in Washington DC, students participate in more than 30 hands-on exhibits in addition to talking to representative from various colleges/universities and professional associations offering opportunities to students interested in construction.

Share Your Experience - Career Workshop for Girl Scouts in Grades 2-6. Sunday, November 9, 2008, 3-5pm in Oakton, VA
Inviting women to talk about their careers in science, engineering and architecture, public service, law, health and medicine, social sciences, arts and entertainment, and business ownership.
